How and why I started to empower women through + spirit + body + creative expression connection
I have been a professional photographer for 25+ years. But it wasn't until about 8 years that I began to use photos to empower myself by photographing myself, or by being in front of someone else's lens. You see, I was behind the camera for a reason. Despite the fact that I so desperately wanted to be seen, the mere thought of being seen scared the crap out of me. And it went deep and far back into my childhood. It really surfaced when I moved to the US 11 years ago from Colombia. Photography truly helped me start to shift my relationship with myself, and therefore, with the world. I found an online challenge that dared photographers to go deep within themselves while doing self portraits. As I began, I would pick on everything I saw wrong with my body. But with each prompt I started to shift my perspective of me as "each individual imperfection", into this absolutely, perfectly imperfect WHOLE. I became aware of the beautiful WHOLE that I am. Heart, body, mind and soul. AND, as a byproduct of understanding my relationship with my-inner-self, my relationship with my body changed. It is always an ongoing process, but it is a much kinder process with awareness, compassion and so much love. I want every single woman in front of my lens to feel this. To know they are able to do this for themselves. To be integrated physically, spiritually, light and shadow. Every woman is worthy of knowing and experiencing this integration, this worthiness, this wholy beauty, the MASTERPIECE each one INHERENTLY is.
